City Beats provides downtown Chattanooga with a day of music, Saturday, March 30, 2019

City Beats provides downtown Chattanooga with a day of music
River City Co., SoundCorps and Jazzanooga (now known as Rise), partnered in March 2018 for a day of music along East M.L. King Boulevard in order to support businesses that were affected by a temporary street closure for road construction.
So successful was that event that it is being brought back this month — only with a new name and location, but still the original format of a free street party to enjoy music by local artists while supporting local businesses.
City Beats will be held Saturday, March 30, around the Passageways Alley/Cooper's Alley in downtown Chattanooga.
Starting at 2 p.m., the public is invited to stroll the alley at 10 E. Seventh Street and the 700 blocks of Cherry and Market streets while enjoying lunch or dinner at one of the surrounding downtown venues.
Inside nearby businesses, local musicians will play from 2 to 9 p.m.
Following is the schedule of artists, locations and times.
2-4 p.m. DLY2, soul/funk, Cadence Coffee, 11 E. Seventh St.
6-8 p.m. OGYA World Music, rhythm/dance, Cooper's Alley/Passageways Installation, 10 E. Seventh St.
7-9 p.m. Mary Edwards, jazz, London Calling, 715 Cherry St.
7-9 p.m. C Grimey, hip-hop, The Mad Priest, 719 Cherry St.
7-9 p.m. Gino Fanelli, jazz, Burns Tobacconist, 723 Cherry St.
7-9 p.m. Amber Fults, folk, Bantam + Biddy, 728 Market St.
7-9 p.m. The Trinity Band, jazz, Chattanooga Billiard Club, 725 Cherry St.
8:15-9:15 p.m. Tryezz, DJ, Cooper's Alley/Passageways Installation, 10 E. Seventh St.

Work at the park on SEA, Tuesday, March 26, 2019

subject: [neighbors] Work at the park on SEA
Be prepared to tell your kids to stay away from the taped off area behind the pavilion by the playground, bc the city engineers are trying to figure out why we have so much water there when it rains!
I talked with a few workers this afternoon who were so kind and knowledgeable.  They said that the current Parks and Rec head was top notch and had a city engineer out trying to figure out the issue.  So far, they found mystery plumbing (not a big surprise in St Elmo) as well as crazy amounts of water coming up from underground.  I have the same seepage issue in my backyard across the street which used to be part of the rock quarry.  All the underground rocks allow water to travel and then it comes up where it can.
The good news is that they are tending to it and it will take some time. I also asked them to put new mulch on their radar.  They suggested that it should be replaced when we are past the Spring rains.
So grateful for the attention our park is getting!

For Gold and Glory: Spanish Conquistadors in Tennessee, Saturday, March 2, 2019

For Gold and Glory: Spanish Conquistadors in Tennessee
Free.

Fort Oglethorpe, GA: On Saturday, March 2, at 2 pm, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will conduct a special 1-hour program focusing on Spanish contact in the Southeastern United States, specifically in the Chattanooga region. This is a free program and will take place at the Gateway Site, near 134 Hamm Road, in Moccasin Bend National Archeological District. Special Program signs will be also be placed along Manufacturers and Hamm Roads to assist participants to the program location.

Sometimes our reasons for doing certain things are not always what they seem. In 1540, the first Europeans made contact with the indigenous people living in today’s greater Chattanooga area.  That contact did not seem like such a bad thing at first. Unfortunately, Hernando de Soto led the Spanish conquistadors making this contact, and he was not there as a friendly envoy from the king of Spain. Soto was after something far more self-serving: gold and glory. Years before, as a member of Francisco Pizarro’s expedition in Peru, Soto helped capture and ransom the Incan Emperor Atahualpa. The vast riches he witnessed in Peru pushed Soto on a similar expedition into the Southeast. Come learn about the atrocities spread by these Spanish “conquerors” as they trekked through this region almost 480 years ago.

GPS Terpsichord Spring Concert, Friday & Saturday, March 1 & 2, 2019

GPS Terpsichord Spring Concert | 180°
March 1 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
|Recurring Event (See all)
| Free
The Terpsichord Spring Concert takes a look back as well as forward. Appropriately titled 180°, the show begins with an homage to the mother of modern dance, Isadora Duncan (1877-1927), and ends with a modern work of jazz. In between, dances are set to music ranging from Macklemore to the indie folk band Bon Iver.
“The concert title comes from the idea of the show’s opening and closing acts, which are totally different,” says Terpsichord President Carson Thatcher ’19. “We came up with the idea of going half of a circle, or 180 degrees, to something entirely different by the end of the concert.”
