Manifest Voices Saturday, July 28, 2018

Manifest Voices
Saturday, July 28
6:00pm-8:00pm
Chattanooga artist and teacher Christian J. Collier's MANIFEST Voices poetry workshop will be concluding its third year with a free showcase on July 28, and the community is both invited and encouraged to come. Each of his students will be taking the stage to perform a set of powerful, original material.

The program, which is sponsored by the Southern Lit Alliance, uses an original poetry curriculum to provide a number of sustaining benefits for teenagers in the Greater Chattanooga area. Over the course of eight weeks, the students learned an array of creative writing and poetic devices, how to apply them in their work, and how to be able to perform them effectively.

Christian J. Collier is an accomplished writer and musician who has performed with several members of HBO's Def Poetry, Minton Sparks, and legendary poet Ishmael Reed to name a few. He is a 2015 recipient of The Loft Literary Center's Spoken Word Immersion Fellowship. His work has also been featured on The Guardian, and he has also given two TEDx Talks and appeared on an episode of TNT's State Farm Neighborhood Sessions with multi-platinum recording artist Usher Raymond.

The MANIFEST Voices showcase takes place on July 28 at The Arts Building (301 E 11th St #300). Doors open for the event at 5:30 PM, and the performance will run from 6 to 8. It is free to attend, and attendees are encouraged to arrive early due to limited seating.

Morristown: In The Air And Sun Saturday, July 28, 2018

Morristown: In The Air And Sun
Saturday, July 28

2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
We're going to be screening Morristown: In The Air And The Sun and raising funds to benefit HOLALakeway. In April, an ICE raid rocked the Morristown area, stealing over 90 people from the community, and instilling fear in every immigrant family. HOLALakeway has been working to help families get on their feet and support the victims of ICE's terror tactics.

Read more about the ICE Raid: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/06/11/us/tennessee-immigration-trump.html

ABOUT THE FILM
In this hour-long documentary, director Anne Lewis chronicles nearly a decade of change in Morristown, Tennessee, through interviews with displaced or low-wage Southern workers, Mexican immigrants, and workers and families impacted by globalization.

The film shows how working-class people in Mexico and eastern Tennessee are caught in the throes of massive economic change, challenging their assumptions about work, family, nation and community.

“Morristown” is in Spanish and English with subtitles.

“..brings the complex issue of globalization down to its human level — where workers on both sides of the border, men and women, struggle to survive. In the film, the workers speak from the heart, whether in Spanish or English, and while there is poignancy in their stories, there is also inspiration as they challenge corporate power in cross-cultural solidarity.” – Howard Zinn, author of "A People’s History of the United States"
