Like Leaves Before the Wind - A Civilian Perspective of the Confederate Breakthrough Saturday, April 28

Like Leaves Before the Wind - A Civilian Perspective of the Confederate Breakthrough

Saturday, April 28
10 - 11:30 a.m

On Saturday, April 28, at 10 am, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will present a 30-minute program about the civilian perspective of the Confederate breakthrough.  This program will originate at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center, then caravan to the program parking area. There will be a short walk, uphill from the parking area to the program location.

Have you ever been caught napping? If you have, you are not alone.  On September 20, 1863, Charles Dana, the US Assistant Secretary of War, mentally and physically fatigued, dismounted his horse, lay on a knoll in South Dyer Field, and was soon deep asleep.  Suddenly, he was startled awake by “…the most infernal noise I ever heard.” Dana, unknowingly, chose to nap in the area directly in the crosshairs of Confederate General James Longstreet’s main attack, now known as “The Breakthrough.” Often, on battlefields, visitors hear the stories from soldiers’ perspectives, but on this particular day, 1n 1863, at least two civilians left their accounts of what transpired in the fields that changed the tide of battle in favor of the Confederates. We hope you will not be caught napping like Dana and join us as we explore this interesting story associated with the Battle of Chickamauga.
Location:
Chickamauga Battlefield

Time:
10:00 AM to 11:30 AM

Guided Hike on the Cumberland Trail, Friday, April 27, 2018

Guided Hike on the Cumberland Trail
Friday, April 27
10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Join Outdoor Chattanooga’s experienced guide staff for a one-way, mostly downhill guided hike on the scenic Cumberland Trail on Friday, April 27 at 10:00 a.m. This is one of 12 different short section hikes (4-7 miles each) on the Cumberland Trail being offered as part of our Cumberland Trail Hiking Series. (See schedule below)
**This hike has some availability-reservations required in advance. If interested, call to register. Marking yourself as going on this event does not count as registration. Participants that are registered will receive a confirmation email with hike details.**
The Cumberland Trail is known for its beauty, mountain streams and remote setting. The trail is single track, traveling mostly downhill (a couple short climbs) where hikers may need to high step over rocks, deadfall and other obstacles. New hikers should expect this route to be challenging but certainly attainable. Guides and a shuttle will be provided for the one way, mostly downhill trek so you can enjoy the scenic views and sounds of nature without the worry of getting lost.
Cost: FREE. Registration is required in advance. All details about the section hikes are given to participants upon registration via email. The CT is a remote trail over rugged terrain. We ask participants have some hiking experience and be in good physical shape to hike 4-7 miles continuously on sections rated as moderately strenuous. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a participating parent or responsible adult.

BREATHE. EASY. Mobile Lung CT Coach, Wednesday & Thursday, April 25 & 26, 2018

BREATHE. EASY. Mobile Lung CT Coach
Wednesday & Thursday, April 25 & 26
10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Lung cancer screening is a test to look for signs of lung cancer in otherwise healthy people. The low-dose CT scan shows a 3-D image of your lungs that is clearer and more detailed than regular x-rays, allowing doctors to diagnose lung cancer at its earliest stage, before there are any symptoms. This is when lung cancer is most curable. The whole process takes less than ten minutes and there is no need to do anything special to prepare for the screening.
The low-dose CT lung cancer scan has been shown to improve survival by 20 percent according to The National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
Factors that put you at high risk of developing lung cancer include:
· Age 50 or greater
· Smoking history
· Family history of cancer
· Exposure to cancer causing agents (asbestos, diesel fumes, Radon, coal smoke, soot, etc.)
If you believe you are at risk of having lung cancer, don’t wait, call to schedule your appointment. Walk-up appointments will also be available at all the YMCA locations.
Private insurance companies cover lung cancer screening for high-risk individuals. Medicare and Medicaid also cover lung cancer screening. In order to receive a lung cancer screen, you must have a doctor’s referral. If you feel that you are at risk, call your doctor and say you are interested in a low-dose CT scan. Together you can discuss your risk and decide if a lung screening is right for you.

Civil War Walking Tour, Saturday, April 21, 2018

Waterfront, 1864:
Exploring Civil War Chattanooga

Saturday, April 21
9 - 11:30 a.m.

On Saturday, April 21, at 9 am, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, in partnership with Outdoor Chattanooga, will lead a 2-mile, 2-hour walking tour of downtown Chattanooga, along the Tennessee River, highlighting the history and points of interest associated with Chattanooga’s Civil War waterfront. The tour will begin at Outdoor Chattanooga (200 River Street, Chattanooga, TN).

Today, Chattanooga’s downtown waterfront is an iconic part of the city’s economic development. However, this is not the first time the scenic shores of the Tennessee River have played a vital role in the city’s story. After the Union Army captured Chattanooga in the fall of 1863, they quickly began establishing a wide array of fortifications, docks, warehouses, offices, and arsenals to support military operations in the area. This walking tour will visit the sites of key locations to the Union Army’s activities in Chattanooga.

Please make sure to bring a bottle of water and comfortable walking shoes.
