Harvest Night at Calvary Chapel Chattanooga, Wednesday, October 31, 2018

Harvest Night at Calvary Chapel Chattanooga
October 31 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The month of October calls for some of our favorite things: sweatshirt weather, football, pumpkin spice lattes, and, of course, Harvest Night!
This year, Harvest Night will be held on Wednesday, October 31st, and we invite you and your whole crew to come out and join us for this safe night of family fun. Starting at 6pm, we’ll have inflatables in the sanctuary, games in the classrooms, and candy everywhere!
No sign up is necessary, but it would help us out greatly if you could contribute an unopened bag of candy for the event. Just drop it in one of the barrels in the lobby over the next few weekends.

Cumberland Trail Hike, Saturday, October 27, 2018

Cumberland Trail Hike
Saturday, October 27
1:00 – 4:30pm
Description:
Join Outdoor Chattanooga's experienced guide staff for a one-way, mostly downhill guided hike on the scenic Cumberland Trail on Saturday, October 27 at 1:00 p.m. This is one of 12 different short section hikes (4-7 miles each) on the Cumberland Trail being offered as part of our Cumberland Trail Hiking Series. (See schedule below)
The Cumberland Trail is known for its beauty, mountain streams and remote setting. The trail is single track, traveling mostly downhill (a couple short climbs) where hikers may need to high step over rocks, deadfall and other obstacles. New hikers should expect this route to be challenging but certainly attainable. Guides and a shuttle will be provided for the one way, mostly downhill trek so you can enjoy the scenic views and sounds of nature without the worry of getting lost.
Cost: FREE. Registration is required in advance as space is limited in the shuttle vehicle. All details about the section hikes are given to participants upon registration via email. The CT is a remote trail over rugged terrain. We ask participants have some hiking experience and be in good physical shape to hike 4-7 miles continuously on sections rated as moderately strenuous. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a participating parent or responsible adult.
For more information and to get registered for this hike call (423) 643-6888.

It was a gamble to say the least, sneaking up on Confederates in order to open a vital supply line to a starving Union army in Chattanooga. In the early morning hours of October 27, 1863, over a thousand blue-clad soldiers silently floated down the Tennessee River toward Brown’s Ferry, an important river crossing guarded by Southern soldiers. Suddenly, masked by the darkness and fog, Union soldiers splashed into the shallow water and made landfall! Living historians will bring this important event to life on its 155th Anniversary.

Compelled to Stay in Slavery:" The Wartime Captivity of the 44th United States Colored Infantry, Tuesday, October 16, 2018

Compelled to Stay in Slavery:" The Wartime Captivity of the 44th United States Colored Infantry
10/16/2018 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM
Free
On Tuesday, October 16, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, in partnership with the Bessie Smith Cultural Center, invites the public to attend a free, 45-minute program at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center, 200 East Martin Luther King Boulevard, Chattanooga, TN 37403. The doors open at 5:30 pm, and the formal presentation begins at 5:45 pm, focusing on the experiences of soldiers in the 44th United State Colored Infantry who were captured and re-enslaved.
In 1864, thousands of African Americans joined the Union Army in Chattanooga, with many enlisting in the 44th United States Colored Infantry, one of several regiments being organized in the city that year. However, a large portion of the regiment was captured by Confederates near Dalton, Georgia, that fall.  Despite being enlisted soldiers, the Confederates re-enslaved many of these prisoners of war. Using pension affidavits, Caroline Newhall, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, has been documenting the captivity experiences of Chattanooga’s most famous black regiment and will be sharing some of her exciting research during this special presentation. This program is made possible through the generous support of the park’s cooperating association, Eastern National, and the Bessie Smith Cultural Center.

Beginning at 2 pm, this 45 minute program will focus on the Cherokee who lived in North Georgia in the years leading up their forced removal in 1838.  The Cherokee saw the odds mounting against them in the early 1800s, so, they embraced the idea of becoming like the “white man” in an attempt to hold on to their homes and lands. However, their hopes were ultimately dashed.  Many Cherokee families in Northwest Georgia were forced into camps to await their removal, such as the one under the shadow of Fort Cumming.  Join us to learn about the life of the Cherokee and how it was turned upside down as they trudged from the fort to Ross’ Landing to await their ultimate fate.

Beginning at 10 am, this 45 minute program will focus on Brainerd Mission’s connection with the Cherokee and its closure as a result of Indian Removal. The Reverend Daniel Buttrick, a missionary at Brainerd, remembered the scenes of removal by recording that the Cherokee’s exposure to the wind and rain, not to mention them being herded “together, men, women and children, like droves of hogs” hastened many to a premature grave.  Come learn about the plight of the Cherokee, some of whom were educated at Brainerd, and were forced from their homes, leading to Ross’ Landing and whatever lay beyond.
