Above and Beyond the Call of Duty - Chickamauga Medal of Honor Recipients, Sunday, May 27, 2018

Above and Beyond the Call of Duty - Chickamauga Medal of Honor Recipients
Sunday, May 27
2:00 PM to 3:30 PM

Fort Oglethorpe, GA: On Sunday, May 27, at 2 pm, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will present a special 90-minute car caravan tour focusing on Medal of Honor recipients at Chickamauga.  This program begins at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center.

The Medal of Honor is still considered to be one of the most prestigious honors received while serving in the United States Armed Forces.  The Medal was born during the Civil War and was ultimately awarded over 1,500 times for acts during that conflict, almost half of all Medals ever awarded.  Nine men who fought along the banks of Chickamauga Creek in September 1863 received the honor, but what did each of them do that was considered “above the call of duty?”  This tour will profile some of these men and answer that question. It will also explore the service of other individuals whose actions were just as worthy, yet they did not receive the honor.

South St Elmo Cleanup, Saturday, May 19, 2018

A reminder about the cleanup this weekend:
As many of you remember from the discussion at the May CAHSE meeting, several of us in the community are interested in cleaning up the area along Tennessee Avenue/Lee Avenue at the intersection of Lee Avenue and Burnt Mill Road.
So, please remember we will work to clean up this area May 19.  We know the Ironman events are scheduled for this weekend, but we are interested in cleaning up the dumped materials and in discouraging any more dumping.
So, May 19, 2018, from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM anyone interested in helping clean the area is invited to participate in the community cleanup.  It will take place as follows:
We will clean the visible and easily removable trash, debris, etc., and the City will provide bags for the materials. The City's Public Works department will pick up the bags of refuse next week.  Please bring work gloves, sturdy footwear, and any tools you think will be useful.  Water, ice, and hand cleanser will be provided.
We will begin on West 55th Street (3rd house on the right from Tennessee Avenue going  up the hill) so please park along West 55th Street and reduce congestion on Tennessee Avenue.  Since the weather looks to be rainy, in the event of rain, we will conduct the clean-up on June 9.
The goals are to: (1) remove the most easily removable trash and clean as much as we can in a couple of hours; and (2) discourage others who may be "inspired" by seeing the trash and debris to dump more.
