Mental Health Matters is a new monthly series of free community gatherings focused on offering help, hope and healing related to common issues of mental health. Hosted by Hixson United Methodist Church and Come and Reason Ministries, insightful and practical presentations on the human brain, mental illness, and treatment and healing will take place every second Thursday of each month throughout the year (Click here for the full 2018 list with descriptions). Gatherings will include a topical presentation followed by time for networking and connection with dessert and coffee.
Thursday, August 9: The Aging Brain
What happens to the brain as we age? Are we doomed to lose our memories and become senile? Are there choices we can make to protect our brain from the ravages of time? In this presentation we will examine the evidence-based lifestyle and non-pharmacological interventions which will protect your brain and diminish your risk of dementia.
Objectives:
1. Identify risk factors that accelerate the aging process.
2. Differentiate normal aging from pathological aging (dementia).
3. Identify evidence based lifestyle factors and non-drug interventions that slow the aging process and prevent dementia.
