Special Programs at Moccasin Bend and Point Park, Saturday & Sunday, October 10 & 11, 2015

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to participate in a series of special programs at Moccasin Bend National Archeological District and at Point Park, atop Lookout Mountain, on Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11. The weekend’s programs will focus on the 152nd anniversary of Chattanooga’s besiegement.

On October 5, 1863, the first boom echoed across the Chattanooga landscape. The shrieking shell, fired from Lookout Mountain, sliced through the morning air before burying itself on Moccasin Bend, in the floor of a tent, between two blue-clad soldiers. Union General John Beatty recalled that “one of the soldiers turned very cooly [sic] to the other and said, ‘… you see what you get by leaving your door open.’” Thus began a constant barrage of artillery fire between Union artillery on Moccasin Bend and Confederate guns on Lookout Mountain. Frustration quickly befell the besieging Confederates as they tried to starve the Union army into submission, while increasing hope crept into the Union camp as the “Moccasin Battery” held the peninsula, which was essentially the key to Chattanooga and a supply line to Union troops stationed in the beleaguered city.

Programs will take place on both Moccasin Bend and at Point Park, exploring the siege of Chattanooga.

Moccasin Bend Programs

Saturday

At 10 am, 12:30 pm, and 2:45 pm, Park Historian Jim Ogden will lead two hour hikes up to the Union Artillery positions along Stringers Ridge. Along the way, visitors will meet living historians describing life on Moccasin Bend during the Siege of Chattanooga. Visitors are encouraged to bring water bottles and to wear appropriate clothing and footwear.

At 9:30 am, 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 1:30 pm, 2:30 pm, and 3:30 pm, living historians will fire cannon on Moccasin Bend for the first time since 1863.

**All hikes and programs will begin at the south parking area, also known as the model airplane field, located on Moccasin Bend Road. To reach this location, take the Manufacturer's Road exit off Highway 27. From there, follow the "Special Event" signs to the program location. There are no admission fees for programs at Moccasin Bend.**

Sunday

Point Park Programs
Saturday & Sunday

At 9:30 am, 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 1:30 pm, 2:30 pm, and 3:30 pm, living historians will share the experiences of Confederate soldiers stationed on Lookout Mountain in what is now Point Park in early October 1863. These soldier programs will take place at both the Ochs Observatory at the point of Lookout Mountain and at the eastern scenic overlook in Point Park. These programs will occur in conjunction with the artillery firings on Moccasin Bend, which will be audible from Point Park.

At 9:45 am, 10:45 am, 11:45 am, 1:45 pm, 2:45 pm, and 3:45 pm, living historians will present an artillery firing program telling the story of the Siege of Chattanooga from the Confederate perspective. The sound of the cannon will be audible on Moccasin Bend, and will serve as a backdrop for programs taking place there.

Admission to Point Park is $5 for adults ages 16 and older, children 15 and younger enter for free.
