Join the Access Fund-Jeep Conservation Team and
the Southeastern Climbers Coalition (SCC) for a professional climbing
stewardship workshop at newly acquired climbing areas in Southeast
Tennessee - Hell's Kitchen Boulders and Dogwood West. This unique 3-day
event will provide you with a set of tools to evaluate and mitigate
impacts across the entire climbing system.
Participants will choose sessions on: 1)
Introductory Fundamentals or 2) Advanced Technical Skills (prior
experience in trail design or climbing area conservation strongly
recommended). These sessions are designed to meet you where you're at -
whether you are new to conservation work in climbing areas, have
volunteered on trail days or attended workshops in the past, we hope you
will find the workshops engaging, meaningful, and practical.

When: Friday, October 19 to Sunday, October 21, 2018
Here's a glimpse of the overall schedule:
Friday, October 19th; 6-9 PM: Welcome & Introductions.
Location: TBA - Tennessee Bouldering Authority
Meet, greet & climb! Get to know fellow advocates and discuss what it takes to be a rock star of climbing area stewardship. Free climbing provided to workshop participants - Thanks TBA!
Saturday, October 20th; 8 AM - 3 PM: Tools of the Trade.
Location: Dogwood West & Hell's Kitchen. Coffee provided by the Access Fund.
Fundamentals of climbing area conservation OR Advanced technical rock skills
Track 1: Fundamentals. Identify & assess climbing area impacts,
bouldering specific conservation, trail design, construction &
planning.
Track 2: Advanced Technical Skills. Learn equipment, set-up and
safety for moving, splitting and shaping large rocks for technical
structures.
Saturday night: Hell's Kitchen & Dogwood Grand Opening PARTY! 6-10 PM: Open to the public. Keg
and dinner at the Dogwood East Campground. Hang out, play games, win
prizes! Free camping on site provided by Dogwood LLC! Invite your
friends! Beer sponsored by Tennessee Brew Works! Dinner sponsored by TBA provided by Screen Door Kitchen.
Sunday, October 21; 9 AM - 4 PM: Putting it in Action.
*We are seeking single-day volunteers for Sunday only*
Location: Dogwood West & Hell's Kitchen. Coffee provided by the Access Fund.
Apply best practices of climber access improvement and natural resource protection.
Track 1: Fundamentals. Adopt a Crag at Hell's Kitchen - new trail
construction, crew leading for conservation work with volunteers.
Track 2: Advanced Technical Skills. Adopt a Crag at Dogwood West
Access - staircase construction, crew leading for technical rock work
with volunteers.
Please register ASAP as space is limited.
Details: This is a FREE
workshop, participants are responsible for their own travel, food,
other expenses. Free camping is provided at the Access Fund - SCC
property Dogwood West. Participants should plan on bringing backpack,
water, sunscreen, sturdy shoes, and weather appropriate clothing as well
as camping supplies. Optional to bring personal work gloves and
climbing equipment (for post-work climbing). Field days will be spent
away from vehicles so lunches should be pre-packed. Stay tuned as we are
working on food and beverage support for the weekend.
More info: Participants will gain knowledge and
national context in: climbing area stewardship, climbing trends,
assessing conditions at climbing areas, understanding climbers as a
unique user group, developing and implementing resource protection
plans, management decision making, bouldering specific conservation, and
working with volunteers. Field sessions will highlight specific
construction techniques & skills, visualizing climbing use patterns,
local area considerations, controlling user flow, water dispersion and
actually getting dirty.
