For 19th-century Americans, water represented both nature and
civilization. Waters were the interstate highways in early 19th-century
United States. Many Americans earned their living as farmers, and
waterways provided an efficient means of getting crops to market and the
Tennessee River played a vital role in the growth of Chattanooga and
the nation, but not without challenges. This program will tell the
stories of what traveling the Tennessee River in the 19th century was like.
