-Ty Burr- of the Boston Globe said "Breathless was;
"The movie (that) liberated the cinema -- the stories you could tell and
the ways you could tell them -- as clearly and cleanly as Picasso freed
painting and the Sex Pistols rebooted rock."
Jean-Luc Godard exploded onto the film scene in 1960 with this jazzy,
free-form, and sexy homage to the American film genres (esp. film noir)
that had so inspired him as a writer for the French film journal,
Cahiers du cinéma.
Renowned for its innovative jump cuts, blustery bravado, and an
anything-goes crime narrative, this influential film starred the
effervescent young stars Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg as lovers on
the lam who team up in a desperate bid to escape to Italy.
Most importantly, Breathless launched (along with Truffaut's The 400
Blows) the French New Wave - a movement that had an enormous effect on
filmmakers worldwide, but especially here in America. Editor Anne V.
Coates, when cutting "Lawrence of Arabia" has confessed to changing the
film's entire edit strategy upon seeing Breathless.
In the process, Breathless ensured that cinema would never be the same.
