Soldiers, Servants, and Civilians: African Americans at Chickamauga 1863-1945
Sun, Feb 18th
2:00pm-4:00pm
Sun, Feb 18th
2:00pm-4:00pm
Fort Oglethorpe, GA: On Sunday, February 18, at 2 pm, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will provide a free, 2-hour car caravan tour of Chickamauga Battlefield, exploring the experiences of African Americans at the site from the Civil War through World War II. Meet at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center for this special tour.
Around 125,000 soldiers clashed at the Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863. Instrumental to the operation of both armies were large numbers of African Americans serving as laborers and servants, both enslaved in the Confederate Army and as hired free men in the Union Army. Immediately after the Civil War, United States Colored Troops encamped on the battlefield as they conducted the grisly task of recovering the remains of those killed at Chickamauga. During the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II African American soldiers trained at Chickamauga, and throughout the park's early history, they were instrumental in the preservation of the site, including the members of an all African American Civilian Conservation Corps camp.

Everything Begins with Soil, Saturday, February 17, 2018
Everything Begins with Soil,
Sat, Feb 17th
10:00am-12:00pm
The Master Gardeners of Hamilton County (MGHC), in association with the University of Tennessee Extension, extend their outreach programs with free monthly gardening classes open to the public.
On Saturday, February 17, from 10 a.m. to noon, the topic will be "Everything Begins with Soil" presented by UT Extension Agent, Tom Stebbins and master gardener Bud Hines. MGHC classes take place at the UT Extension, Agricultural Service Center, 6183 Adamson Circle, located off Bonny Oaks Drive.
Tom Stebbins notes, "Soil is not just 'dirt' but varying combinations of sand, silt, clay, organic matter, air, water and a multitude of micro-organisms. Healthy plants can only occur where there is healthy soil.
This class will teach you how to take a soil test, how to read the lab results, and how to amend the soil with fertilizers or natural enrichment. We'll also cover how to compost your own kitchen and yard waste to enrich the soil and save money. A successful garden begins with well-balanced, well-drained soil, and we'll get you started on the right foot - or hand!"
Master Gardeners of Hamilton County is a non-profit, educational, volunteer organization that plays an important role in the civic life of Chattanooga and the surrounding area.
Among the many on-going landscaping and garden partnerships undertaken by MGHC are: Aquarium Butterfly & Hummingbird Garden, Bonny Oaks Arboretum, Chattanooga Area Food Bank, Chattanooga Zoo, McCoy Farm & Garden, Reflection Riding Arboretum & Nature Center, and Siskin Children's Garden.

The Star's Song by Erin Bode
I know, I know, it's February, why am I Still listening to "Christmas" music, you ask.
Well,
I like it,
it's pretty,
it's relaxing ...
This past Christmas season, I heard a song that I really like, that I thought that I would share:
The Star's Song
by Erin Bode
He picked me out one in a billion
He said, "I've got something for you to do
They'll need to know where to go to find him
And it's all up to you,
oh
Standing out in the desert
There's a little town called Bethlehem
Lead the way to the little stable
Lead the way to the little man," (or is it "lamb"?)
oh
What a strange and a lovely thing for a star to do
To lead the way to the baby boy born for you
Shine the light across the footprints in the sand
Follow me down the road that leads to Bethlehem
He picked me out one in a billion
He said, "I've got something for you to do
After centuries of darkness
Comes my promised son to you,"
oh
What a strange and a lovely thing for a star to do
To lead the way to the baby boy born for you
Shine the light across the footprints in the sand
Follow me down the road that leads to Bethlehem
Follow me down the road that leads to Bethlehem
Follow me down the road that leads to Bethlehem

In The Footsteps of Tragedy and Hope: Moccasin Bend, 1819-1840
- Location: Brown's Ferry Federal Road Trace
- 707 Moccasin Bend Road
- Chattanooga, TN 37405
Dates: February 4, 2018
- Time: 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to participate in a 90-minute, 1.2 mile walking tour exploring lives of settlers, slaves, and Cherokee on Moccasin Bend. This program will take place along the Brown’s Ferry Federal Road Trace on Moccasin Bend National Archeological District. Look for, and follow, the “Special Program” signs beginning on Manufacturers Road, west of US 27.
In 1839, Jacob Cummings escaped from slavery from a farm near Brown’s Ferry. Fifty-Five years later, he shared his life story with a historian writing about the Underground Railroad. Cummings’s account provides a fascinating glimpse into life on Moccasin Bend, from the time of the Treaty of 1819 and the establishment of Hamilton County, through Indian Removal, as well as Underground Railroad activities around Chattanooga.
Join us for this special program as we use Cummings’s story to better understand this turbulent era of Chattanooga’s history. As a reminder, please wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the conditions. Lightweight, portable chairs are permitted and bringing water is encouraged.
